  • Firefighter Grants

Now Accepting Applications - March 3 to April 4. 2008

The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of the fire department and on affiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources. For fiscal year 2005, Congress reauthorized the Assistance to Firefighters Grants for an additional 5 years through 2010.

  • Control Grants for Exotic Aquatic Plants

Grants are awarded to local lake associations and municipalities for the control and treatment of exotic aquatic weeds, like milfoil. DES will pay 100 percent of the treatment costs for a new infestation, and will match up to 80 percent for repeat management practices. Further, monies may be available to lake associations and students to develop innovative research projects to control exotic plants. Necessary permits, such as herbicide and/or wetlands permits, must be obtained by the lake association or town for the management activities, and the project must be approved by DES prior to receiving a grant. Funding is available to conduct approximately eight to ten management activities each year, and one or two innovative management projects. On average, the program disburses up to $90,000 annually for these grants.
