Broadband Mapping - Rural Addressing

Project Summary:

The Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission (UVLSRPC) has been working with partners around the State since 2010 to expand broadband Internet access through the New Hampshire Broadband Mapping and Planning Program. The Rural Addressing project fills a crucial data gap in planning for broadband expansion - this project  created a master address map for rural areas where broadband service is spotty or non-existent. There are almost 40,000 households in rural areas (defined as census blocks over 2 square miles in size) around the State of New Hampshire. Knowing the number and location of rural households without broadband or with poor service allows for better, more efficient planning.

UVLSRPC  trained community volunteers to collect rural street address information with a GPS unit, in order to create this master address map of rural residential households. With volunteer's field data as well as information available from municipalities, each Regional Planning Commission will create the master address map for its region - these regional datasets will be sent to the University of New Hampshire to create a statewide map of all rural residential addresses.

Volunteers are trained to use a handheld Garmin GPS unit and assigned a specific town in the region. Upon completion of the addressing work, UVLSRPC will loan the GPS unit to the volunteers for personal or community projects, such as mapping trails or stonewalls or other local project.
