Energy Efficiency for Rural Water Supplies - Municipal Planning

UVLSRPC Projects

Project Administrator:

Victoria Davis

Project Title:

Energy Efficiency for Rural Water Supplies - Municipal Planning

Related Services:

Energy, Land Use Planning, Natural Resources, Emergency Management

Project Summary:

This portion of the Energy Efficiency for Rural Water Supplies (EERWS) Project focused on direct contact and planning-level discussions with municipal leaders, focussing  on collaboration among the four municipalities that comprise nearly all of the towns in the Lake Sunapee watershed:  Newbury, Sunapee, New London, and Springfield. Addressing and potentially coordinating policies for multiple municipalities within a watershed is novel in New Hampshire.  This effort followed the work already completed as part of the Lake Sunapee Watershed Infrastructure Project, which was a comprehensive study of the connection between stormwater run-off, long-term land development, and potential impacts on local infrastructure.

The long-term benefits to good water quality extend beyond natural habitat and public recreation.  The quality of water entering a community water supply system affects the cost of treating the water to meet federal drinking water standards, which includes energy consumption  costs of the treatment process.

The initiative culminated at a workshop focusing on Low Impact Development technologies with interviews of municipal officials to chronicle the process.
