Project Administrator:

Michael McCrory

Project Title:

Lebanon Source Water Protection Program

Related Services:

Land Use Planning, Natural Resources

Project Summary:

IN 2010, the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission (UVLSRPC) received funding from the NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) on behalf of the City of Lebanon to implement a planning program to further protect and improve the riparian buffers that safeguard the City of Lebanon's water supply. The project focused on the watershed area upgradient of the city's water supply intake that lies within the City of Lebanon, specifically the riparian areas along Mascoma Lake as well as the Mascoma River, Blodgetts Brook, Hardy Hill Brook, Stoney Brook and their tributaries. The project served as an initial study and planning effort in the area closest to the City's water supply intake. The framework and findings in this project can be used in similar planning initiatives in other municipalities within the same watershed (including Lyme, Dorchester, Hanover, Canaan, Orange, Lebanon, Enfield and Grafton). While the analysis and planning for this project focused on Lebanon, the public outreach was advertised and targeted  the entire watershed.

Project Objectives

The proposed approach to riparian buffer protection involved three primary objectives:

1) Evaluation and analysis of current protection gaps and land uses of riparian areas.

2) Development of a riparian buffer protection plan for the City of Lebanon.

3) Engagement of landowners in the project study area and community leaders to increase thier understanding of the benefits of  riparian buffer management and restoration.
