Project Summary:
The Commission received a $200,000 grant from USDA for a project to achieve six tasks:
1.) HHW Collection Expansion: Develop new locations for one-day "satellite" household hazardous waste (HHW) collections especially at the edges of the region to provide access to the smaller towns; increase public outreach efforts; develop a statewide HHW Coordinators' network; and explore a partnership with Hartford, VT for use of their permanent HHW facility.
2.) Nontoxic Cleaning Program: Expand the Healthy Home: Clean Safe & Save program developed in 2013 to educate the public about using nontoxic cleaning products to reduce hazardous products in the home.
3.) Chemical Safety Workshops: Train school faculty and staff to use less hazardous chemicals in the school chemistry laboratories and art studios.
4.) Transfer Station Attendant Technical Assistance; Provide training to tranfer station attendants for safety issues such as spill response, safety equipment needs and maintenance, expansion of recycling markets and greater revenues though local processing; expaning Universal Waste collection; update operations and emergency response plans and develop various composting programs.
Work with the Upper Valley Substance Misuse Prevention Partnership (Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital) and the Greater Sullivan County Regional Prevention Network (Sullivan County) to accomplish the following tasks 5 and 6.
5.) Unwanted Medicines Public Outreach: Teach the public why improper disposal or horing medicines is a danger to our water systems and our youth. Provide information about access to proper unwanted meds disposal.
6.) Police and Pharmacy Meds Collection: Work with the municipal police departments and pharmacies to provide greater medicine disposal options by assisting them in developing drop-box programs and educational outreach.
