Unwanted Medicine Collections

Project Summary:
Dumping medicines down the drain or flushing them down the toilet contaminates our drinking water because septic systems and wastewater treatment facilities do not remove these chemicals. Collection of these drugs provides responsible management to keep unwanted medicines out of our water.
Beginning in 2010, the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission(UVLSRPC) partnered with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Out-Patient Pharmacy, who now generously provides Pharmacists for the annual unwanted medicine collections in conjunction with our HHW (household hazardous waste) collections. The host community provides a police officer to direct the collection and take any controlled drugs (addictive or with street value) back to the police station, for secure storage, until taken for disposal. The noncontrolled drugs are taken by the hazardous waste hauler for incineration with the hazardous wastes.
Additional Information
Participating towns in 2013 are Cornish, Enfield, Goshen, Hanover, Lebanon, Lempster, Lyme, New London, Newbury, Orford, Piermont, Plainfield, Springfield, Sunapee, Unity, Washington, and Wilmot. Residents from participating towns can bring their household hazardous waste and unwanted medicines for free.
