Project Summary:
In 2006, UVLSRPC convened a team of local, regional, and state officials to examine existing and future conditions along U.S. Route 4 from Interstate 89-Exit 17 to the Canaan/Orange town line. The resulting U.S. Route 4 Corridor Management Study, published in February 2007, identified short and long-term strategies to prevent or reduce future traffic congestion along U.S. Route 4 as economic development occurs throughout the region.
The U.S. Route 4 Corridor Management Study outlines a four-pronged approach for improvements:
- Addressing existing infrastructure deficiencies.
- Addressing intersection congestion through the implementation of alternative capacity improvements.
- Managing future growth and development by implementing access management techniques.
- Managing future transportation demand through the implementation of a travel demand management program for the corridor.
Since the U.S. Route 4 Corridor Management Study was published, a number of the study's recommendations have been implemented. A realignment of the intersection of U.S. Route 4 and NH Route 4A in Lebanon will occur as part of a project to replace the nearby bridge over the Mascoma River. The Town of Enfield is developing an access management plan for the section of U.S. Route 4 between Baltic Street and the Enfield/Canaan Town Line, and a project to improve safety on U.S. Route 4 between the Lebanon/Enfield town line and the intersection of Maple/Main Street in Enfield is the region's top priority for inclusion in the next Ten-Year Transportation Improvement Plan.
